Case Study for Derby-College

Background

NIC have been providing cleaning & support services to Derby College for over 19 years since they were first awarded the cleaning contract back in August 1995. Initially the contract was just one site at Wilmorton, but the college expanded year after year through new developments and take-overs. Today there are 4 main campuses plus 6 further buildings serving 25,000 students and 1500 employers. The College’s flagship campus, The Roundhouse, which can seat 700 people receives particularly heavy footfall as it is not only used for teaching purposes and a refectory but is open to the public at weekends and evenings for events, dinner shows and even TV programmes e.g. Antiques Roadshow and Question Time are regular visitors. Thus the cleaning programme needs to meet the requirements of not only a very busy college but also the diversity of dealing with the pressures brought to bear by all the other commercial activities.

Challenges

Almost from the outset cleaning hours had to be reduced dramatically because of government educational budget cuts. This resulted in a reduction of over half the cleaning work force. To combat this a system called ‘clean to need’ was introduced which meant that the focus needed to be on thorough training methods for all staff. This new way of working was a complete success and consequently excellent cleaning standards were maintained throughout all the college locations. This cleaning system has been so successful that it is still in place today and together with changes in innovation and technology ensures NIC continue to deliver a first class service to the college.

The country’s economy has played a major role in affecting educational finances over the many years of the cleaning contract. As a result ‘added value’ and flexibility have been vitally important factors as far as the college has been concerned. NIC have been able to deliver on both counts through its ability to immediately respond to any emergencies and to ‘go above and beyond the call of duty’ at all times while delivering cost and efficiency savings to the college wherever possible.

Conclusion

As a result of NIC’s track record, performance and professionalism the contract has been successfully retendered on 4 separate occasions. NIC have even been awarded the Golden Service Award for ‘Best Cleaned Premises in the Education Sector’ on 4 occasions for their cleaning service at Derby College. The strong relationship between NIC and Derby College is the key to the success of the contract. NIC mirror Derby College’s aims and desires for excellence and innovation. Thus completely understanding the College’s ethos. Resulting in this perfect partnership.
