DATA ANALYSIS TRAINING AND CONSULTANCY FOR ORGANISATIONS AND INDIVIDUALS, TAKEN TO NEW LEVELS

HIGH PROFESSIONALISM

  • We bring a combination of academic rigour and hard-nosed pragmatism based on years of experience in both academia and industry.

LOW COST

  • Few overheads, modest financial aims and no VAT mean prices as low as a third of what you would normally pay. Our courses are affordable both to organisations for whom conventional training is too expensive and the individual information worker.

TAILORED TO THE NON-TECHNICAL SPECIALIST

  • Years of experience teaching computing, business and maths to the non-specialist make us ideal to teach the growing number of non-technical professionals who need to generate their own insight into data.

Our Approach

TAKING DATA ANALYSIS BEYOND THE ORDINARY
Our aim is to show that very much more can be done in the area of data analysis than is commonly supposed. We are not content with just using standard techniques, but aim to use the tools available to organisations to a much higher degree of sophistication. And we come with an evangelizing zeal to show organisations that they can get far greater insights into their operations and develop far better informed plans with this approach, leading to significantly higher levels of organisational efficiency. And it allows information workers with good basic Excel and SQL skills to build on this foundation to become highly accomplished analysts with skills well in excess of those they could gain elsewhere.

MINIMAL INVESTMENT AND OPERATIONAL COSTS
We also aim to show that this can be done with your existing software and people. We use existing Excel, R and SQL Server software, so there is no need to buy expensive specialised statistical and business intelligence packages. And there is no need to hire expensive specialists; we have a proven track record of turning non-technical staff with just basic computing skills into analysts with comparable powers to their more formally educated counterparts.

BEYOND TRAINING AND TECHNIQUE
We can achieve this feat by not merely training people, but teaching them. Our classes are part lecture, part seminar, where discussion and exploration are encouraged and students come to understand the core concepts behind what they are doing. They don’t just learn by rote and we go well beyond giving them merely a token introduction to the key underlying ideas.

This approach leaves them not merely as data functionaries, but creative and intellectually rigorous analysts, able to systematically and imaginatively explore data in ways that meet and go beyond the needs of the organisation. On top of this, they are given challenging and realistic problems in class, with full feedback and support from the tutor, both during and beyond the course. They don’t merely learn the theory, but are continually shown how it applies in the real world, and they are encouraged to think for themselves how to apply theory to real world needs.

Beyond this, students are also shown how to interpret their results and can also be given a basic strategic management methodology that allows them to fit their efforts into the overall plans and aims of the organisation. They come out not only as analysts with far greater technical skills, but also with the business skills to fully participate in the development of the plans of the organisation.

Courses

Courses are offered either in-house or publicly – typically both.

IN-HOUSE COURSES

  • All in-house courses come with a half-day further support per day of the course, to be given either in-house or remotely.
  • They are also customisable; where this is done either by dropping material from the course or including material from another course, there is no charge.
  • Customisation by adding new material is chargeable, but rates are reasonable and we aim to keep them to a minimum.
  • Each day of training takes place at a week’s interval in order to allow students to complete their exercises.

PUBLIC COURSES

  • All public courses come with a year’s support, with delegates able to contact their tutor at will with problems and questions relating to the material of the course.
  • Courses take place either in the evenings or on a Saturday, with a week’s interval between each session to allow for the completion of exercises.

About us

Mark Robbins has extensive experience of databases, data analysis and statistics, both in industry and for the past 20 years as a university and adult education lecturer. There he taught a wide range of computer science, business studies and mathematics topics, and over the past 12 years has focused on teaching non-specialists in databases, statistics, strategic management and introductory programming.

This has given him a deep insight into the needs of such people and great expertise in how to initiate them into the worlds of systems and business. It has also furnished proof that these non-specialists can cope with considerable intellectual challenges, comparable to the levels achieved by specialists in these areas – if taught in the right way.

In his working and voluntary life, he has gained wide experience of business and especially of the charitable and public sectors, giving him a combination of hard-nosed pragmatism and theoretical sophistication rare in the world of training and consultancy.

He also runs his own charity, The Freshwater Foundation.
