As an employer, you will know that employees may need to take time off due to illness or unforeseen circumstances. However, absences from work can have a major effect on productivity, finances and team morale and so managing these absences effectively is critical for you. We developed PAM (Proactive Absence Management) to help you achieve that.

We can help you implement proven strategies to monitor, control and reduce absences. We can step in to take on difficult cases of long-term absence and, if necessary, utilise our legal expertise to manage an employee’s departure in a fair and legally sound manner.

The management of long term absences and repetitive short term absences can become particularly complex if poorly handled, and many managers do not have the skills or confidence to manage absences well. Absences can also be particularly complex when they involve terminal illnesses, such as cancer, or a mental health issue. We are experts at handling such cases in a compassionate and professional manner.


We have created an innovative and unique service to tackle absences in the workplace, making the process easy and smooth for employer. Our HR Medical Specialists are all HR Consultants with a medical background and specialist knowledge in physiotherapy, mental health, occupational health or social work who can help businesses manage absenteeism. 

Our HR Medical Specialists are different to occupational health (OH) specialists:

  • They are more cost effective as their solutions are more flexible and HR Medical Specialists can often carry out their work by telephone
  • The HR Medical Specialists can work in partnership with the employer to find commercially focused solutions to the problem. This can be supported with confidential reports for the employer on the situation and potential solutions. OH specialists on the other hand play a different role and are required to share their reports with the employee too
  • We look for practical solutions that can be put in place before an absence escalates to prevent the employer incurring costs and the loss of vital staff
  • Our HR Medical Specialists are not bound by ‘medical in confidence’, as OH Specialists are, which means we can remain focussed on the best solution for both parties and do not have the constraints of restricted communication with the employer


We work with employers to ensure they can invest in the health and wellness of their staff. We therefore provide a holistic approach to workplace wellbeing, while our HR Medical Specialists address absences once they have already occurred our health professionals perform Wellness Checks to help prevent absences or health issues in the first place.

Our team of dedicated health professionals provide onsite Wellness Checks for employees that identify personal risk for the biggest killers in the UK: heart disease, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease and some forms of dementia.

Each employee receives a personalised report with their results complete with health and lifestyle recommendations. Should any of their results be of concern to any of our nurses, they will be referred on. Employers also receive an anonymised report providing a picture of the overall health of your employees with suggestions for any widespread improvements that could be made.

Our Wellness checks can help ensure your workforce perform at their peak level by:

  • Supporting your employees wellbeing
  • Helping to uncover health problems at an early stage

We also support employees’ mental health with our Mental Health First Aid Training and Stress Management for Managers courses enabling your leadership teams to spot the early markers of poor mental health and know how to go about managing it.


Mediation is an effective way of resolving workplace arguments and disputes without the need to go to court. It involves an independent third party – a mediator – who helps both sides come to an agreement and consensus through building communication. Mediation is particularly effective as an early resolution mechanism pre or post lodging a grievance, to limit the risk of disputes escalating and causing costly exits.

Even if mediation is not successful, the confidential discussions can often lead to a resolution at a later date, again without litigation. The success rate for mediation is usually 70-80%.
