About Us

We are a specialist building services engineering design consultancy with 25 engineers.  We were formed in 1949 and have worked for both the public and private sector.  We are experienced in designing the building services for all types of buildings across all sectors, including: education, healthcare, offices, carehomes and extracare, retail, leisure, residential and industrial.  Our experience spans new build developments, such as the £120million BREEAM Outstanding new Headquarters for The Co-Operative Group, through to working on heritage buildings, such as the iconic Grade I listed Elizabeth Tower (Big Ben).

We are members of a significant number of public sector Frameworks, including: NEPO, Fusion21, Sovini Housing, Parliamentary Estates, BBC, NHS Shared Business Services, Construction Impact Framework, and The Christie NHS Foundation Trust.

Owner Managed Business

We are an owner-managed business with three company Directors, all of whom are practising engineers.  One of the Directors is involved in each of our projects.  Having the owners so close to our projects and our clients, ensures that everything that comes from our Office is of the highest quality.  It also makes us proactive, and able to respond to clients’ needs quickly and efficiently.

Knowledge & Experience

Our Directors and Associate Directors, who are also Project Directors, have an average of over 29 years’ experience each.  They ensure that we understand the client’s brief and that we deliver our clients’ needs without over-engineering, resulting in value for money.

We assess the client’s needs and budget and undertake a life-cycle assessment of the building services solutions.  We are able to advise clients where greater capital expenditure may result in lower running and/or maintenance costs, providing overall efficiencies within the project over a period of time.

Strong Team

We are a specialist Building Services Engineering Design Consultancy with over 25 engineers.  We are one of the largest specialist consultancies in the North of England.  We invest in the continual professional development of our team members.  As a result we have a number of CIBSE Low Carbon Consultants and CIBSE Low Carbon Energy Assessors.

Quality Approach and Awards

Our quality approach, which is accredited to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001.  We have also been recognised with a number of awards, including the HVR Building Services Consultancy of the Year, and been Highly Commended in the Stockport Business Awards.  Our quality approach is driven by our processes and systems, but also our internal culture to deliver high quality advice and designs, and the highest standard of service.

We are Innovative & Pragmatic

We recently received a grant from the Government’s Technology Strategy Board, to research how best to future-proof a building so it can be adapted in later years in response to climate change.  This research informed our design of the new build Stoke Extracare PFI Projects (385 apartments across three sites), for which we achieved 45% carbon reduction.

Working with Us

Project Directors

We allocate a Project Director to every project, who is one of our Directors, Technical Directors or Associate Directors.  Each of these individuals has between 15 and 40 years’ experience in building services engineering design.  As an owner-managed business you can be assured that our Project Directors work hard to deliver a quality design, on time and to budget.

When we are first appointed to a project, the Project Director will take the time to understand the client’s project brief. This will include the client’s objectives – both organisational objectives and objectives for the building, the budget, programme, the client’s desire to include sustainable solutions, and who the stakeholders are.

Resourcing

From this, the Project Director will liaise with our Resourcing Committee, which is made up of our senior team, ie. All of the Project Directors.  The Resourcing Committee will allocate the right engineers to the project – in terms of skills, experience and number of engineers.  The Resourcing Committee meets once per week to assess the progress of each project, and to re-allocate resource where appropriate to ensure that our projects progress well.

Quality Approach

All of our engineers follow our company process map, which is accredited to ISO9001, and takes the engineers through the different stages of a project.  This ensures that our engineers understand when internal approval of the design should be sought, as well as when client approval is required.

Collaborative Approach

We work closely with all involved in the project – the client, the stakeholders, the rest of the design team, and the contractors to ensure that we deliver best value, and there is no nugatory spend.  To support this collaborative approach, where clients require the project to be designed in BIM, we are able to deliver this.  However, our approach to Digital Engineering and Common Data Environment goes beyond BIM.  We have invested in Magicad, which is not just about being able to collaborate with the rest of the design team in 3D, but for our engineers to be able to design in a 3D environment.

Building & Energy Modelling

We have an in-house Building & Energy Modelling Team who produce 3D models using Level 5 software “EDSL TAS”. This software can undertake dynamic thermal analysis, Climate Based Daylight Modelling (CBDM) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). This software is essential to ensure that our M&E Designs meet strict design criteria for buildings, such as TM52 (Adaptive Thermal Comfort) compliance and CBDM compliance, together with the requirement to comply with Part L Building Regulations.

However, wherever possible we go one step further than Part L and improve on the actual Building Emission Rate (BER). Many Clients require a percentage reduction from the Target Emission Rate (TER) and we achieve this by utilising passive design measures first, including improving natural ventilation of the building, increasing thermal mass, introducing Phase Change Materials (PCMs) and only if this fails will we will introduce renewable energy technologies.

In the last 12 months our modelling team has saved 400,000KG/CO² per year on a range of projects. Over a 25 year lifetime, that equates to 10M KG/CO².
