Welcome to Wye Valley Mediation – Helping people move though conflict

Claire Jackson practised as a barrister and principal lecturer in family law before qualifying as a family mediator. With her team at Wye Valley Mediation Claire provides mediation for families who are separating, farming disputes and trains young people in mediation skills. This two day course teaches the skills of mediation and guides professionals in how to set up a mediation service run by young people for their peers.

We aim to support our local rural community through offering a professional and caring service. Our comfortable offices are on the border of England and Wales, but we also have access to other suitable venues should clients wish to mediate closer to work or home.

Our work in schools underpins our belief that we can all learn to move through conflict in a constructive way. Our children are the society of the future and we believe that a simple resolution process - peer mediation - will help children build skills that they can use on maturity. We aim to provide schools with an easy process which enables them to set up a service easily and ensure that the service is sustainable.

Clifford Primary School, Tim Hill Her Majesty’s Inspector, Ofsted – 3rd March 2017:

“You have created a real sense of community within the school where pupils take care of each other. Pupils told me about the successful introduction of peer mediators on the playground. These specially trained pupils help others resolve disagreements in a non-confrontational manner. This is just one example of several where pupils at Clifford are trusted and given special responsibilities. Pupils play a genuine part in shaping the school’s future because they are consulted about their school and what is working best for them. Leaders listen to, reflect and then act on pupils’ feedback.”

Work Place Mediation

Claire Jackson qualified as a barrister in 1994 and practised common law from 1 Dr. Johnson’s Chambers before becoming a Principal Lecturer on the Bar Professional Training Course. Claire continues to teach Alternative Dispute Resolution and the LLM at BPP Law School along with running training for employees of Powys County Council and organisations such as the Hope Centre in Hereford. Claire is an ADR and FMC Accredited Mediator with an interest in education; Hay-on-Wye Primary won Young Mediator of the Year from the Civil Mediation Council in 2018.

Steve Hancox is a practising barrister at Cathedral Chambers Newport. He is a business advisor and has successfully mediated disputes relating to unfair/wrongful dismissal and disputes within the workplace arising from difficulties between employees. Steve runs training in workplace mediation to groups of HR Managers for example in the NHS. Steve is CEDR, ADR Group Accredited Mediator and SFEDI Accredited Business Advisor.

Hybrid Mediation

We also offer hybrid mediation where both solicitors attend with their clients but the process is run on a mediation as opposed to collaborative law basis. I am pleased to say the feedback has been excellent and even those solicitors who are collaborative lawyers have said that having a 3rd party who is independent of all those involved, helped move the matter to settlement.

Families

We provide private and legally aided family mediation for families that are separating. Claire Jackson is also Direct Child Consultation accredited and is therefore able to see your children independently. Claire facilitates the Incredible Years Parenting Programme for Powys County Council and feeds her experience into her family mediation practice.

Schools

We provide training to schools to set up their own peer mediation service. This enables children to resolve their own disputes. Children are the society of the future and we believe introducing a simple resolution process builds resilience and a positive approach to any potential conflict as an adult.

We also can help with:

  • Conference and Negotiation Skills
  • Staff Development
  • Resolving Disputes out of Court
  • Civil Litigation
  • Criminal Litigation and Evidence
