Smart Local Energy Systems (SLES) – Council led energy transformation
Smart Local Energy Systems present the a significant opportunity for cities and councils; not only to play a major role in decarbonisation and improving air quality for citizens, they also present a potential for new revenue streams and significant cost reductions for the council.
Additionally they present a significant positive economic impact for the region, with the inflow of significant investment in distributed energy assets and the jobs that accompany these investments for the maintenance and operation of these assets. This includes not just distributed generation such as solar and wind, it also includes battery storage, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, as well digital technologies, consumer assets (e.g. heat pumps) and energy distribution infrastructure needed to make such a system work.
We will design the SLES in such a way that it can take advantage of all the opportunities currently available and is designed to take advantages of future regulatory changes that enable further improvements such as the implementation of Local Energy Markets (LEM) when these become possible. Some regions may also be able to take advantage of the opportunities presented by bio-gas and hydrogen infrastructure and factor this into their SLES.
We leverage the experience from ground-breaking smart energy transformations including the most ambitious UK projects to date, and can advise and execute on both the technology, policy and financial/economic designs needed to turn such opportunities into reality.
Climate Risk Assessment and Strategy
We can advise on all components of climate risk, including but not limited to physical risks emerging from extreme weather (e.g. flooding, drought) as well as transition risks that emerge from the transition to a low carbon, low green house gas economy. We can provide an assessment of how exposed a local economy or local industry is to climate risk and are experts in advising on strategies to mitigate the negative impacts of these risk, by looking primarily at innovation (including business model innovation) and the natural capacities and endowments of a region.
Net-Zero Audit and Environmental Trajectory Correction
Net-zero is a great buzz word – because many believe “it says what it does on the tin”! This is not necessarily the case, many Net-zero programmes are in fact not aligned with the best science or economics around climate change, and some of these strategies are at risk of being considered greenwashing in the future. For those who want to assess the environmental and ecological integrity of their net-zero strategies and mission we can do such an assessment and should it be needed provide recommendations on how to bring these missions in-line with best practice.
