About Us

Our business model is to develop engineering solutions which can be easily validated by our customers and integrated into their own systems. This is best achieved with an open relationship and an open-source technology.

To date, our products are now used in the following countries: Argentina; Brazil; Chile; China; Costa Rica; Ethiopia; France; Germany; Italy; Kenya; Monaco; Senegal; Spain; Uganda; the UK and the USA.

At the core of our partnership in 2016 was sensor specialist Alphasense, with whom we developed a standard digital front end for their electrochemical sensors. A gap in the market was identified for an electronic interface between their sensors and industry-standard microcontrollers, including Raspberry Pi and BeagleBone.

This work resulted in a product capable of sampling gas concentrations to within +/- 5 parts per billion (ppb). Subsequent development of secure, real-time data retrieval and storage allows actionable environmental data reporting from anywhere in the world.

Historically South Coast Science has supplied products to research and academic organisations, such as the United Nations and Universities around the world. As a result of this work our background has been in science more than commercial markets.

We now present solutions stemming from this foundation in academic rigour and scientific discovery. Because we have developed all of our products using an open-source platform, data can now be validated by our customers and easily integrated into their own systems.

Separating noise from environmental data

South Coast Science are early adopters of collocation with reference devices, in order to better understand and correct for the well-known temperature and humidity effects on electrochemical sensors.

This work has been escalated through the use of machine learning techniques. PM sensor correction is now finished and we anticipate completing gas sensor correction by end of Q3, 2022.

Automated error correction in real-time

Using validated data interpretation algorithms, error correction is performed on the device and in real-time.
Testing with co-located reference instruments shows a high degree of accuracy.
Users have access to both raw and corrected data and can test against their own error correction methods to check the validity of the model.

Working with the UN

We work with the UN on implementation of ambient air quality networks globally. We also work to develop a platform encouraging the public to replicate and contribute to the open-source designs. Our solutions are easy to operate and require minimum local support.

Products

The Praxis is the result of a working collaboration between ultra-low noise specialists, electrochemical sensor experts, and environmental scientists. Our software has its roots within best practice for commercial, cloud-centric middleware and big data management.

Using our robust Praxis ‘engine’ we are developing products that are optimised for the following applications:

  • Ambient air quality
  • Environmental health/Smart City
  • Indoor air quality
  • Odour monitoring

Praxis/Urban

Ambient air quality

The South Coast Science Praxis/Urban offers an out-of-the-box solution for urban air quality monitoring. The Praxis answers both the challenge of capturing accurate data in variable climate conditions and the need for fine-grained air quality monitoring networks.

The Praxis/Urban offers ultra-low noise sensing for gasses (CO, H2S, NO, NO2, O3, SO2, CO2) and particulates (PM1, PM2.5 and PM10). The device supports multiple analysis techniques including any sampling rate and real-time access.

Consistent device function is possible within a broad climate range (T/rH) with a casing rated for hostile environments. This includes continuous operation for up to 2 hours in the event of external power loss.

Use Praxis to build a high-density air quality network using low-cost, individually baselined devices that use open-source device firmware for highly customisable sensing, data delivery and analysis.

Praxis/OPCube

Environmental Health/Smart City

The Praxis/OPCube is a small rugged device that measures both gas and particulate matter (pm1, pm2.5, pm10) and is an effective monitor for low-cost screening, construction dust and local authority investigations. The Praxis/OPCube uses Alphasense sensors throughout and can be supplied with one (soon to be two) of their standard A4 electrochemical gas or VOC sensors.

Sensor data including temperature and humidity can be stored on the device or transmitted in real-time via the 4G modem to the South Coast Science cloud. Open-source device firmware is supplied for highly customisable sensing and analysis. To maximise ROI over the life of the instrument, upgrades to device firmware and diagnostics are supplied remotely (if South Coast Science data analytics is used).

Praxis/GasCube

Odour monitoring in the Wastewater sector

Effective odour management in the wastewater treatment industry starts with accurate measurement to establish baselines. This is so that the impact of process design, treatment type and weather patterns amongst other influences can be understood.

However, ppb-level measurement of H2S (and other) odour has traditionally been expensive, relying on very expensive equipment which has complex service/calibration requirements and cannot be left unattended on a fence line or is unsuitable as a genuinely portable device.

The Praxis/GasCube is a multi-gas device designed for odour monitoring in a variety of environments.

  • Up to four gases from NO, CO2, VOC, H2S, SO2, CO
  • Environmental range from -40 to +50 C
  • Battery/solar or mains powered
  • Applications include: wastewater, petrochem, landfill, poultry farming.

The exact specifications of the Praxis/GasCube are being refined in discussion with customers. South Coast Science invites further input.

IAQ

Praxis/IAQ

Indoor air quality

The most accurate and flexible internal air quality monitoring device for real-time reporting. Serviced office managers are, rightly, more concerned about indoor air quality than they’ve ever been. The need to control the spread of airborne pathogens, as well as a growing realisation that air quality can affect tenants’ productivity, are fuelling investment in indoor air quality management.

The Praxis/IAQ device for Indoor Air Quality monitoring is part of the South Coast Science technology roadmap and will be developed in accordance with the WELL building standard. This can be used together with either the Praxis/Urban or Praxis/OPCube, so that both indoor and outdoor air can be comprehensively monitored and therefore managed.

The exact specifications of the Praxis/IAQ are being refined in discussion with customers. South Coast Science invites further input.

Praxis/Handheld

Personal exposure monitoring

To monitor an individual’s exposure to pollution over the course of a typical day, the monitoring device must be highly portable as it will travel with a person indoors and out, almost certainly via several modes of transport.

The Praxis/Handheld may be ‘on the move’ for several hours before being returned to base and because of this, it is equipped to store large amounts of data until it reconnects with a wi-fi network. Alternatively, the user can upload to the cloud in real-time via a mobile phone hotspot

  • Can be hand-carried, attached to a backpack, or for in-vehicle use.
  • Environmental range from -40 to +50 C.
  • Any one gas from CO, H2S, NO, NO2, O3, SO2 and undifferentiated VOCs. (CO2 available later.)
  • PM1, PM2.5 and PM10.

The Handheld is currently being evaluated in the field.

Partners & Networks

We are proud that all South Coast Science software and data protocols are open source and this has led us to many fruitful partnerships and to seek out membership in networks of like minded organisations.
