MyCake specialises in financial benchmarking for organisations. Our core skill is finding and analysing organisational and financial data from businesses across a sector, and interpreting it.

Digging into data to create insight and strategy
We help funders to make decisions, and help organisations to be more successful. To be resilient. Even to innovate.
Dashboards

If you need a picture of your sector in your place or wish to compare your organisation's financial results against one or more groups of similar organisations then our dashboards are for you.
Reports

MyCake publishes various reports. The common theme across all of them is the use of financial data to support decision making.
Workshops

From time to time the MyCake team delivers workshops. We tend to focus on building financial analysis skills with SME's and non-profits.
We work with
Local & National Government
We can help both local and national government to examine the non-profit ecosystems of specific places. By analysing the data, we build a rich, detailed, and nuanced picture of what's going on financially in any particular geographic area.
Local Government
We put our data to work at city and regional level, to review the non-profit ecosystems in specific places. This allows us to answer questions such as:
- How does the map of provision of non-profit suppliers match up against the total Gross Value Added (GVA) for a place?
- What is the non-profit economy worth as a proportion of the GVA for a place? Is it above or below the national average of 0.9%?
- What is the scale (number of organisations | total turnover) of non-profit activity in sectors such as Health | Social Care | Housing | Education | Culture & Leisure?
- Which sectors are growing? Which are shrinking? Which are either contributing to, or using up, reserves? Which ones are using debt finance?
- Where are grant funders and social investors most active? (We can analyse by sector | geography | IMD decile | turnover band.)
- Are there particular areas where there is a high level of financial fragility | strongest financial resilience?
- Are there anchor organisations whose financial position is worsening and where support may be needed to avoid losing them?
National Government
At a national level, we have aggregated data feeds of financial information from the Charity Commission, Companies House, Mutuals Register and 360Giving. That means you can look at all registered non-profits in a single place. This gives as complete a picture for the non-profit economy for England and Wales as can be achieved from public data sources. And as we have a longitudinal dataset, you can look at how the picture has changed over a number of years. This can be harnessed to answer questions such as:
- How many non-profits are there nationally? How is this changing over time? What are the patterns in start-ups and closures?
- What are the productivity levels in the non-profit economy, and how do they vary?
- What is the annual value of charities' turnover by sector?
- How is the financial health of non-profits changing over time? Are sectors becoming more financially robust or more fragile?
- Which organisations are at greatest risk of financial failure in the coming 12-36 months?
- How many organisations are operating in sectors such as Education | Culture | Social Services?
- How does the balance of activity vary across the country? Are there particular hotspots and coldspots by region? For example, why are there no community energy businesses in Bradford, but a cluster in Bristol?
- What is the financial health of organisations in a sector or region? What can we see in the patterns of organisations which make a profit (contribution to reserves) compared to those making a loss?
- What are the patterns in the closure of non-profits, and what does this tell us about the health of sectors? For example, nurseries and pre-schools have much higher churn than religious organisations. Is this impacting the provision of services in a sector?
Grant Funders & Social Investors
We help grant funders and social investors in a variety of ways, from evaluation of grant programmes, to analysis of potential grantees, and due diligence ahead of funding. We also provide monitoring of grantees and investees after funding.
Charities & Community Groups
We help charities and community groups to better understand and act upon financial data from comparative organisations. After all, if you understand the numbers better, you can make your money go further.
Creative Businesses & Entrepreneurs
We have years of experience of working with creative folk and entrepreneurs. We help them to understand what others in their industry are doing, based on solid financial data. Helping them to run their businesses, rather than letting their businesses run them.
Our Clients
MyCake works with clients from right across third sector and creative industries.
We put our data to work for local and national government, and help grant funders and social investors, at both portfolio and programme levels.
On an individual organisation level, we help charities and community groups to understand the financial context within which they operate.
We’re also dab hands at helping creative businesses and entrepreneurs to understand their finances better, to improve their resilience, and to become more successful.
