This May, the Science and Technology Facilities Council are providing technology students and budding entrepreneurs from across the UK the opportunity to compete in an exciting international hackathon ActInSpace 2018.

Initiated by the French Space Agency (CNES) and supported by ESA and ESA Business Incubation Centres network, the event will take place in at both Harwell Campus and Sci-Tech Daresbury Campus.

The 24-hour global event will run in 60 cities across five continents, challenging teams to solve real-life industry led challenges through the application of space technologies or data. With the support of mentors from STFC, universities and businesses, the winning UK team will travel to Tolouse, France and be put forward to win a zero gravity flight.

Harwell Campus

In Oxfordshire, competing teams will have access to a knowledgeable and experienced team who currently support UK based start-ups. This helps turn their ideas into profitable products and services using space technology, or develop technologies for use in space, at the ESA Business Incubation Centre, Harwell.

Sci-Tech Daresbury

STFC’s Liverpool City region site is home to the Hartree Centre, a centre of excellence in high performance computing, data analytics and cognitive technologies. Technologists from the centre, and specialists in computational astrophysics from Liverpool John Moores University Astrophysics Research Institute, will be on-hand to offer support to participants wanting to solve a challenge using digital or data-based technologies.
