Agent toolkits

Accurate record keeping will help to ensure that the correct data can be sent to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) by the due dates and reduce delays in payments.

HMRC has 20 regularly refreshed toolkits which are free to download. They contain checklists and guidance to support the accurate completion of returns based on the most commonly found errors.

Agent Talking Points

Agent Talking Points are weekly online digital meetings for tax agents and advisers.

They usually last an hour and focus on topics agents have said they’re interested in or on issues identified by agents and HMRC that may have widespread impact. HMRC experts will be available to answer questions.

Register quickly and easily at least 5 minutes before a meeting is due to start.

The income from property minimising the risk for individuals

This meeting will be dealing specifically with expenses and deductions, allowances and reliefs. Including repairs, the relief for the replacement of domestic items and the restrictions to Income Tax relief for finance costs.

This digital meeting will provide information about the operation of the online Agent Forum and the role of the Issues Overview Group, which is made up of representatives of the professional bodies.

Basis periods - looking at commencement years, changes to accounting date and overlapping periods

During the meeting we will focus on basis periods, a subject that’s prominent around the self-assessment peaks. In particular we look at the different rules that apply to commencement years, the effect on a basis period when there is a change of accounting date and overlapping periods. We also look at some pointers when dealing with a change from sole trader to partnership and vice versa.
