Appeal for witnesses and footage after fatal road traffic incident in Cardiff

We are appealing for witnesses and any dashcam footage of a fatal road traffic incident in Cardiff involving a South Wales Police van and a pedestrian.

Our investigation into the incident, which happened in Merthyr Road, Whitchurch on Saturday 8 December at around 5.20pm is continuing.

Initial information suggests Winifred Greaves, aged 93, had been trying to cross the road, and the police van, which had its headlights on, was not responding to an incident.

Operations Manager Mel Evans yesterday said:

“We are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any dashcam footage to get in touch with our investigators.

“Our thoughts are with Mrs Greaves’ family and friends and anyone affected by her death.

“Following a mandatory referral from South Wales Police, our investigators attended the scene and the post incident procedures. We have taken initial accounts from the officers involved and have contacted the woman’s family to explain our role.”

HM Coroner has been informed and an inquest is due to open in due course.

Anyone with information can email merthyrroadappeal@policeconduct.gov.uk or call 0800 029 4694.
