Appeal for witnesses following incident in east London

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is seeking witnesses to an incident that took place in Newham on Wednesday 8 May where force, including baton strikes, Taser and CS spray, was used to detain a 17 year-old female.

Our investigation follows a complaint made to the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) about the level of force used during the teenager’s detention. The MPS then voluntarily referred the matter to the IOPC.

Interim Regional Director for London, Sal Naseem recently said:

“Having reviewed the complaint and viewed body worn video footage of the incident we decided that this matter requires an independent investigation. It is important for everyone involved that we understand the circumstances surrounding this incident. We will be speaking with the teenager and others who were with her at the time but we would ask that anyone else who may have information that would assist with our enquiries make contact with our investigators.”

The incident took place at around 7.20pm on Roman Road in the vicinity of its junction with the Greenway paths. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact our investigators via or 0800 096 9070.
