Appeal for witnesses for investigation into fatal collision in Watford

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is investigating and appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision in Watford yesterday morning (Tues).

The collision occurred at around 5 am on the A411, Hempstead Road, near the Horns public house. It is understood at this time, prior to the collision an unmarked police car attempted to stop an Audi before it drove off. Within a few minutes police found the vehicle nearby having collided into a tree at the Watford Town Hall roundabout.

The driver of the white Audi car sadly died at the scene. Two passengers in the Audi were taken to hospital with serious injuries where they remain.

Formal identification of the deceased is yet to take place and efforts are being made to inform the man’s next of kin.

IOPC Regional Director Sarah Green said: “This is a tragic event and our sympathies are with the family and friends of the person who has died, those who were injured, and all those affected by this incident.

“Hertfordshire Police made a mandatory referral to us following the incident yesterday morning and we declared an independent investigation. Our investigators travelled to the scene, attended post incident procedures, and have begun gathering relevant evidence including any relevant CCTV.”

Anyone who witnessed any interaction between the police and the Audi prior to the collision, is encouraged to contact us and assist with our independent investigation by calling on 0800 096 9076 or emailing witness@policeconduct.gov.uk.
