Assembly to Recognise the Vital Role Played by All Frontline Workers

The Northern Ireland Assembly will mark the contribution of all frontline workers this week. A minute’s silence will be marked in the Assembly Chamber on Tuesday, International Worker’s Memorial Day, to recognise all those who have died, and particularly healthcare workers, during this public health crisis.

In addition, Parliament Buildings will be lit red on Friday, 1 May for International Workers Day in recognition of the vital role being played by essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Parliament Buildings will continue to be lit blue on Thursdays as part of the ‘Clap for Carers’ campaign.

Alex Maskey, MLA, Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly yesterday said,

“We are very conscious of the important role that all frontline workers are playing at this time—not only are they ensuring that vital services are being delivered, but they are often putting the welfare of society at large ahead of their own health and wellbeing.

“We are mindful that too many of workers delivering these crucial services—delivery people, those working in care homes as well as other frontline services—have lost their lives as they help our society through this pandemic. We are grateful for all their work and wish to express both our gratitude and condolences to all the families who have been bereaved.”
