BCS’s response to Huawei announcement

Dr Bill Mitchell OBE, Director of Policy at BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, yesterday responded to Huawei announcement.

He said:

“We want to know how professionals working in data governance will change what they do if they now feel they must work on the assumption that by default a network is already compromised or disrupted, even if reassured by the details of the government’s announcement. How might this change their approach to professional practice and public trust?

“We welcome the NCSC’s security analysis for the UK telecoms sector that seems to follow a best practice, risk-based assessment and provision of guidance as well as giving examples of what the IT profession should be doing to best mitigate risk.

“The Cyber Security Body of Knowledge (CYBOK) which addresses cyber security skills gap, and which was developed on an internationally collaborative basis, is also of renewed relevance after today’s announcement.

“We need more evidence to understand what this will mean for IT practitioners and we will be listening closely to BCS members, particularly those working in information assurance.”
