Beyond emergency measures: preventing homelessness by building on Everyone In

Blog posted by: Sophie Boobis, Wednesday, 31 March 2021.

The Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government yesterday (31 March 2021) published a new report on homelessness and renting, Protecting the homeless and the private rented sector: MHCLG’s response to Covid-19.

Responding to the report, Sophie Boobis, Head of Policy and Research said:

"The actions taken by the government through the Everyone In initiative has saved lives throughout the pandemic and helped to support many of those experiencing homelessness. This report illustrates that we need to look beyond these emergency measures to ensure that the momentum of the last year is not lost as the government looks to meet its target of ending rough sleeping by 2024.

"With growing economic pressures on households and increasing fears around rent arrears we also need to shift attention into preventing people from becoming homelessness in the first place.

"Homelessness is not inevitable and by acting on these recommendations, we can build on the success of Everyone In and look to prevent a sudden rise in homelessness over the coming months."
