Bringing Big Data to life at the first Big Data in Action Roadshow

techUK's first Big Data in Action Roadshow brought Big Data to life in London recently forming a key part of the Data Driven Economy Week.

Recently techUK’s first ever Big Data in Action Roadshow took place in London bringing to life the value and opportunities of big data and data analytics tools and technologies. A packed audience enjoyed technology demonstrations, presentations, networking and one-to-one industry meetings.

The London roadshow kicked off the 2016 series of roadshows taking place across the UK, with a bang with a brilliant line up of speakers which included Lauren Sager Weinstein, Head of Analytics at Transport for London, Michael Gleaves, Deputy Director of the Hartree Centre and James Hodge, Principle Product Manager at Splunk Services Ltd.

Sponsored by the Hartree Centre, assisted by the Federation of Small Businesses and with big data companies including Data Wranglers, Percentile, Pivigo and Signal all exhibiting the London roadshow brought to life how big data and data analytics can add real value to businesses of all size and sector.

Following a networking breakfast with exhibitors the main focus of the recent event was a speaker led session during which Lauren Sager Weinstein outlined how data analytics had revolutionised the way TfL interacts with its customer data and provided them with clear insights on how customers used their service.

Michael Gleaves demonstrated how the Hartree Centre are working with organisations to adopt high performance computing, big data and cognitive learning technologies to extract real operational value from data. As part of the Data Driven Economy Week the Hartree Centre provided us with some case studies which you can see here.

James Hodge, who was March’s techUK Big Data Hero, then talked the audience through some of the key factors to consider before implementing a big data strategy.

Following the presentations we had a lively audience Q&A session where issues raised included where the UK was in comparison to other countries on the big data journey, data privacy and protection concerns, how the data that companies hold could be used for wider social good and the potential impact of the UK’s big data skills gap. These are all issues which techUK are actively engaged in through the Data Driven Economy Week (#datamatters) and our Big Data and Analytics programme.

techUK is already planning the next two Big Data in Action Roadshows taking place in Bristol on 1 June and Manchester on 25 October.
