CBI: "Digital levy could end up being a blunt instrument to promote online safety"

The CBI has responded to the announcement of the Government's Internet Safety Green Paper.

Tom Thackray, CBI Innovation Director, said:

“High standards of safety are paramount for the UK to be the best place to start and grow a digital business. Social media companies and communications services providers are already collaborating everyday with government to improve safety standards online and this should continue.

“However, a digital levy could end up being a blunt instrument to promote online safety, sending a negative message about the UK’s openness to technology. Businesses will look closely at the details of this initiative as they emerge and engage with the Government as they consult on the proposal.”
