CBI: "The opportunity to get into and get on in work should be accessible for everyone."

Response to government plans aimed at getting more disabled people into work.

The CBI has responded to plans outlined by the government geared towards transforming disability employment over the next ten years.

Neil Carberry, CBI Managing Director for People policy, said:

“The opportunity to get into and get on in work should be accessible for everyone. Closing the employment gap between disabled and non-disabled people is essential. The range of support options available to businesses to help manage any reasonable adjustments to the workplace is significant – so barriers are not as difficult as firms may think. Building an inclusive workplace is the right thing to do, but it also makes business sense as a diversity of people, skills and experiences improve decision-making, boost staff engagement and help firms to serve the needs of their customers.

“With some firms already leading the way, it’s right that the Government’s strategy improves advice and support, and shares what works so more employers possess the knowledge and confidence to improve workplace inclusion. Shining a light on disability in the workplace, including through peer-networks and role models, can help to establish a culture of openness and accountability. Crucially, plans for employers to report on workplace disability must be led by businesses, so that they actually help to change people’s experience at work.”

On mental health provision, Neil said:

“Firms understand the business case when it comes to promoting a fair and inclusive workplace.  It makes the issue of improving workplace mental health increasingly prominent. Talking about mental health with greater openness will help the growing number of people affected stay at or move into work. The CBI supports the recommendations made to businesses by Lord Stevenson and Paul Farmer’s recent review.”
