CEO welcomes in techUK’s first Creating Digital Futures conference

techUK holds its first #CreatingDigitalSkills conference in Manchester on Ada Lovelace Day 2019 with the support of Chris Skidmore MP, Minister for Universities...

We are at the start of a Fourth Industrial Revolution that will change the way we live and work. As more sectors adopt digital technologies and tools, the digital economy will simply become the economy.

In the UK we are already seeing employment in the tech sector grow at a rate of more than 10 per cent a year and we know that digitisation will create many more jobs and opportunities in the future. techUK is committed to ensuring these opportunities are open to all. This will mean not only ensuring individuals have the right skills to thrive in the future world of work but also that they have the motivation and enthusiasm to create their digital future.

I am delighted that you have joined us today in Manchester to explore how industry, academia and policymakers at all levels from Whitehall to the townhall can make this vision a reality. Our plenary sessions will explore how as an industry we can better tell our story and how we build new and innovative pathways into tech. Our workshops on the other hand, we hope, will spark debate and discussion and an exchange of best practice on embedding diversity at every stage to create a culture of continuous learning and development in the workplace.

There has never been a better time to get involved as the sector continues to transform. I hope today we can maintain the on-going and meaningful dialogues around skills policy and explore practical actions for implementation.

Thank you to all our speakers throughout the day, in particular, Chris Skidmore MP, Minister for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation and Scot Gardner, Chief Executive – UK and Ireland, Cisco. I would also like to thank our headline sponsor Cisco, breakout sponsor BT, and our lanyard sponsor Visa Europe. Without whom this event would not be possible.

Speaking about the event, Chris Skidmore MP, Minister for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation, said:

“The techUK conference celebrates the best of UK innovation and our contribution to world-leading digital technology.

“Every day, developments in digital technologies are pushing the boundaries of what is possible, creating more jobs and fast-moving businesses. I am committed to helping the tech sector to grasp the opportunities of the fourth industrial revolution in the UK by ensuring it has the talent and people needed for a digital future, so we remain a leading, global science power.”
