CMS Committee writes to social media companies over dangerous driving content

The Culture, Media and Sport Committee has written to TikTok, YouTube, Meta and Snapchat over concerns about content on video-sharing platforms promoting dangerous driving.

Following recent reporting on tragic road traffic collisions in the UK and Ireland, the letters ask what steps are being taken to tackle dangerous driving content. It also asks about the amount of UK-originated dangerous driving content posted on these platforms, how much has been removed, and what actions are being taken to identify and remove harmful content more quickly.

Comment from the Chair, Dame Caroline Dinenage MP

Chair of the CMS Committee Dame Caroline Dinenage MP yesterday said:

“It is shocking that videos glorifying dangerous driving can be accessed so easily online. We must act quickly to stop this alarming online trend and to reduce the risk of copycat behaviour on our roads. Social media companies must take greater responsibility for the material available on their platforms and explain what more they are doing to identify and remove it.”
