Case study: Richard Huish College

Richard Huish College is an outstanding sixth form college in Taunton offering A Levels, BTECs, Apprenticeships and HE Courses. By working in partnership with end-point assessment organisation NCFE, they have had achieved success with their first cohort of apprentices and are currently delivering to their second cohort for the Senior Healthcare support worker standard.

The introduction of end-point assessment (EPA) is one of the biggest apprenticeship reforms of recent times. Apprenticeship standards are now assessed at the final stage through a collection of assessments that offer confirmation of knowledge, skills and behaviours (KSBs) for a particular role, known as EPA. What’s more, the independent nature of EPA is designed to ensure that skills are transferable across different organisations and respected industry-wide.

Melissa Leavy, Apprenticeship Manger at Richard Huish College commented:

“Although the transition from frameworks to standards is full of uncertainty, NCFE were at the forefront on communicating about EPA and provided the right support and guidance from the beginning. The resources are great, with clear expectations and the assessors kept the same throughout meaning you have a consistent point of contact throughout the journey.”

Islay Aslett, Senior healthcare support worker apprentice commented:

“I enjoyed the process, appreciated the support I received from my peers. The interview and observation process was very pleasant, I appreciated the friendly assessors making me feel comfortable and more confident in their present. Overall a very good experience.”

NCFE is approved by the Education and Skills Funding Agency to deliver EPA in a variety of sectors and subject areas. Visit our End-point assessment webpages to find out more: www.ncfe.org.uk/end-point-assessment
