Catalan separatism is part of a broader crisis of legitimacy

In an article originally published in the Spectator’s Coffee House blog, Open Europe’s Enea Desideri writes that regionalist and separatist demands in Catalonia and elsewhere are only one symptom of a broader European problem: the desire for greater autonomy from authorities that are perceived as illegitimate.

Failing to learn from the Brexit vote and ignoring these more recent regionalist demands does the EU no favours. Enea argues that Brussels urgently needs to improve its legitimacy, and ultimately, the developments in Catalonia and Italy should serve as a warning.
