Centenary Summer School draws over 500 students

Our inaugural summer school took place in July, drawing 547 students from countries including Indonesia, the United States, Nigeria, India and Sri Lanka.

The event was a unique opportunity for ambitious young people to meet international affairs experts and discuss issues including climate change and skills like critical thinking. Chatham House organised the online event as part of its second century goal to reach, engage and inspire the next generation of policy leaders.

The summer school offered 16 to 18-year-old participants ten sessions of webinars and networking opportunities delivered in a virtual classroom - creating a fun, interactive careers and learning space at a time of school closures and severe restrictions.

Practical workshops, covering skills like CV writing, work experience and careers were particularly popular, when many participants reported feeling worried about their future career options.

Alis Martin, Internships and Outreach Manager at Chatham House, recently said:

“We are delighted that our inaugural summer school was so successful, particularly since it was delivered during the pandemic.

“My colleagues were thrilled to offer their time and experience, and help create welcoming, stimulating classes for young people.

“The summer was a really challenging time for those making their first career choices, and the school seems to have brought clarity and confidence to many who took part. Thank-you so much to all those who helped make the summer school a reality.”
