Charities Encouraged to do More on Cyber Security

As part of the Government’s National Cyber Security Strategy, research has been carried out with UK registered charities to explore and assess their awareness, attitudes and experiences around cyber security.

The findings of the research are not surprising, with the third sector suffering from many of the same issues that affect small and large businesses such as lack of staff awareness and training. Other findings highlight the fact that those with responsibility for cyber security within charities often rely on outsourced IT providers for incident response. There is, however, a growing awareness amongst charities of the threats posed by cyber security and the need for new skills and to raise general awareness amongst staff.

The research will help inform the work that the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and Government are doing to help organisations in the third sector be secure and resilient online. With the run up to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in May 2018, such work will be crucial to ensuring that charities remain able to protect the sensitive data that many hold.
