In its latest report, the European Scrutiny Committee reiterates outstanding questions over plans for Channel Tunnel safety procedures after the end of the post-Brexit transition period; and requests an urgent hearing with the Minister responsible.

Business continuity warnings

The Committee has previously, in its twenty-third report, warned that post-transition plans for Channel Tunnel safety raise business continuity concerns, and urged the Government to produce contingency plans rather than simply expressing its opposition to EU proposals.

Government plans remain unclear

Yesterday’s report contains further correspondence from the Minister, Rachel Maclean MP, but the Committee remains unable “to discern a clear alternative plan on the part of the Government for how the Channel Tunnel could operate at the end of the transition period.”

The Committee also warns that bilateral talks with France on the future operation of the Tunnel will inevitably cover highly sensitive topics, such as future UK alignment with EU law after the end of the transition period, and an ongoing oversight and enforcement role for the European Court of Justice.

Urgent hearing required

Given the importance of the Tunnel’s continued smooth operation, and the rapidly approaching end of the transition period, the Committee has requested that the Minister appear at an urgent hearing within the next four weeks to discuss these issues and provide an update on negotiations with France.
