Communities across Wales receive £247,987 from the Big Lottery Fund

This month 62 delighted organisations were awarded nearly quarter of a million pounds in grants from the National Lottery Awards for All programme run by the Big Lottery Fund. Many of the projects will improve access to the outdoors for young people with grants for improving playgrounds and adding state of the art exercise equipment while others offer opportunities to learn new skills.

All these awards are only made possible because people buy tickets for the National Lottery – a percentage of the ticket sales is set aside to fund grants like these. For details of all awards this month please click here

Ysgol Maes Garmon in Mold have received £4,970 for equipment, including heart rate monitors, designed to help their pupils get fit. Ysgol y Castell in Rhyl will use £5,000 to provide fitness equipment in the playground.

NoFitState Community Circus Ltd have been awarded £5,000 to deliver circus activity workshops to young people in Caerphilly over the summer holidays. The Taking Flight Theatre Company will use their £5,000 to deliver arts and crafts activities for deaf, blind and disabled young people.

Meanwhile the young at heart won’t be left out as Bike to the Future will use their grant of £3,126 to offer free bicycle surgeries to let Newtown’s cyclists learn repair skills. Actif Woods Wednesday Walkers in Machynlleth will spend their £5,000 offering a year of Woodland Health Walks aimed at helping people with health conditions to get fit.

For those who prefer their interests delivered indoors Sparks Amateur Radio Society in Pembrokeshire have been awarded £5,000 to set up a new radio club. Croeserw Crochet Class near Port Talbot are spending their £620 grant to get them to the Craft Show at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.

Gareth Williams the Awards for All Programme Manager for the Big Lottery Fund in Wales, said: “Concerns about young people becoming more sedentary have been aired across the media. It’s great that so many of Wales’ communities are addressing this with projects offering opportunities to get fitter while exploring new skills.”
