Consultation on Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation launched

DCMS has launched a consultation on the role, aims and objectives for the new Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation.

The Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Support has today launched a consultation to seek views on the way the new Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation (CDEI) will operate and what its priority areas of work should be. The consultation is launched on the day that Roger Taylor was announced as the new Chair of the Centre. As well as providing background information about the reasons for the creation of the CDEI, the consultation raises many questions where input is being sought in the following three areas:

  1. The Centre’s role and objectives
  2. The Centre’s activities and outputs
  3. How the Centre will operate

In each of these three areas key questions are raised to gather input how the Centre and its work should begin to take shape. The questions being asked cover issues that include:

  • What activities should the Centre undertake and priority issues?
  • Are the proposed areas of work and themes where the Centre can add most value?
  • How should the Centre work with other institutions?
  • How should the Centre effectively engage stakeholders, experts and the public?
  • Should the Centre be placed on a statutory footing, and what statutory powers may the Centre need?

The deadline for written submission is 5 September. techUK will be responding to the consultation and also looking to engage with the DCMS officials on the issues and questions being raised during the formal consultation period. This work will be largely driven by techUK’s Digital Ethics working group.

If members would like to input into techUK’s response or would like to join the Digital Ethics working group, please contact Katherine Mayes, Programme Manager I Cloud, Data, Analytics And Ai, T 020 7331 2019, by Wednesday 27 June.
