Consultation on ending so called “no-fault” repossessions to be launched shortly

The Prime Minister Theresa May has confirmed that a consultation on plans to end Section 21 repossessions in the private rented sector in England will be published shortly.

During a speech at the Chartered Institute of Housing’s conference in Manchester on Wednesday, Mrs May reiterated plans that were first announced by the Government in April.

RLA campaigning since the announcement

A few days after the announcement in April, the RLA launched its own survey, inviting landlords to help shape what the possession process should look like.

The survey broke records, with more than 6,000 landlords having their say about what the future possession process should look like. Preliminary findings from this research, published last month, reveal that nearly half of landlords and letting agents (46%) are more likely to sell some or all of their rental homes as a result of government plans to end Section 21 repossessions, so-called ‘no fault’ evictions.

The research also found over 40% of landlords are waiting for other planned changes by the government to become clear before they make decisions on their ability to provide homes to rent. L

Since the announcement in April, the RLA has represented landlords at high level discussions on possession reform. Our policy director David Smith (pictured below, right) and our policy manager John Stewart have been involved in high level discussions at Number 10.

In May, Housing Minister Heather Wheeler MP also wrote exclusively for our Residential Property Investor magazine. In the article, Ms Wheeler vowed to work with the RLA to develop a possession process that works for all. The article can be read here.
