Coronavirus: Generous landlord offers rent reduction for NHS staff

A kind-hearted landlord is prepared to offer a considerable rent reduction for her two bedroom flat in Weybridge, Surrey, for doctors or nurses who work in the NHS.

Sally-Anne Evans, who is an “accidental” landlord, has contacted the hospital trust close to the property to reach out to any nurses or doctors who need help with accommodation and would be interested in living at the property.

Government guidance relating to self-isolation means that NHS staff may find it necessary to isolate themselves from their own families where they have a vulnerable family member who is being shielded, or possibly relocate to work in different hospitals during the coronavirus pandemic.

Sally-Anne’s flat is just a ten minute drive away from Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, a district general hospital working across two sites in Surrey: St Peter’s Hospital in Chertsey and Ashford Hospital in Ashford.

Sally-Anne said:

“I live in Solihull myself and my son and I rushed to the flat in Weybridge on Sunday to complete the decorating we had been doing before restrictions on movement were introduced. We were at the property for a long time, ironing out any snagging that needed to be sorted out so the property is ready to be occupied.”

“The news headlines are full of stories about doctors and nurses who are giving so much to us and rather than let the flat at the market rent I decided to do some good. Having to live away from their families or relocate to work in different hospitals is a huge sacrifice they are making for the general public. Offering my property to a nurse or doctor on the front line seems like a no-brainer.”

On Monday, Sally-Anne phoned the local NHS Trust HR department to start the process of finding a tenant.
