Creating coherent system leadership

Yesterday was the first public board meeting in common for NHS England and NHS Improvement where we agreed a new way of working, and discussed how local NHS services can better work together and the NHS’ 2018/19 operating plan.

The National Health Service is turning 70 on 5 July 2018. Over the last seven decades the NHS has helped transform the health and wellbeing of the nation and in turn has earned the enduring support of the British people. Through a process of continuous evolution and modernisation it has delivered huge medical advances, improvements in population health and innovations in patient care.

We agreed how NHS England and NHS Improvement are going to work closer together as system leaders for the health service. This includes the majority of our national functions moving to single integrated teams reporting to both organisations, or hosted teams working in one organisation on behalf of both, and final proposals for the North and Midlands and East regional geographies.

We also considered how local NHS services can better work together, building care around patients rather than institutions, and the NHS’ 2018/19 operating plan covering both trusts and CCGs.

More details are available in the papers from today’s board meeting in common.
