DUTY OF CARE REVIEW WELCOMED
Independent review led by Baroness Grey-Thompson into welfare and well-being in sport is published.
The Duty of Care in SportOpen in a new window review was launched in 2016 following the publication of the Government’s strategy for sportOpen in a new window.
It sets out a list of themes and recommendations that aim to look after people at the very heart of our sector – the people who take part and volunteer.
THEMES AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The seven themes outlined in the review include:
- Education
- Transition between different stages (i.e. starting at a club, leaving the sport, changing between clubs/levels)
- Representing the person taking part
- Equality, diversity and inclusion
- Safeguarding
- Mental welfare
- Safety, injury and medical issues.
The aim of the review was to develop a plan for how the government and the sport sector can more effectively look after those taking part.
Whether it’s helping people achieve their potential, making the most of existing talent or attracting new people, the success of sport at grassroots and elite level depends on putting the safety, wellbeing and welfare of those involved first.
We’re clear in our Towards an Active Nation strategy that we need to create a more productive, sustainable and responsible sport sector – and are already working hard to achieve it.
We welcome the publication of the Duty of Care report and recognise the huge amount of work, led by Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson, that has gone in to such a comprehensive review

“We welcome the publication of the Duty of Care report and recognise the huge amount of work, led by Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson, that has gone in to such a comprehensive review,” says our director of sport, Phil Smith.
“We will consider any recommendations from the report that could improve or strengthen the sector and how it treats the people it serves.
“We will be discussing the detail with the review team in the coming weeks to see how we can incorporate their recommendations into our work and that of our partners.”
