Dr Ruth Hussey is appointed Food Standards Agency Deputy Chair

The Secretary of State for Health has announced the appointment of Dr Ruth Hussey CB, OBE, DL as Deputy Chair of the Food Standards Agency. Her appointment begins on 1 July for three years.

Heather Hancock, Chair of the FSA said: 

“I am delighted that Ruth, who has made an outstanding contribution as our Board member for Wales, will now become Deputy Chair of the Food Standards Agency.  Ruth’s deep knowledge of the FSA, including our extensive planning for much more significant responsibilities now the UK is outside the EU, and her background as a highly regarded Chief Medical Officer for Wales – all make her appointment particularly welcome.  As the FSA enters one of the most challenging and exciting periods of its history, and marks its 20th year, I look forward to working closely with Ruth in her new role.”  

Ruth Hussey said:

The FSA is a progressive and effective regulator which works in an evidence based and transparent way.  As the food system continues to evolve, I will strive to ensure that food safety and the public’s health continues to be protected with confidence.”

Ruth Hussey has been the FSA Board Member for Wales and Chair of the Welsh Food Advisory Committee since 2016. As well as her work for the FSA, Ruth is a member of the Health Inequalities Board, Public Health England, a Governor of The Health Foundation and an Advisory Board member for the NIHR, School of Public Health Research. She is an Honorary Professor at the University of Liverpool and a Deputy Lieutenant of Merseyside.
