FSA Chair updates MPs and Peers on Regulating Our Future

Parliamentarians and representatives from the food industry and non-governmental organisations gathered at the House of Commons on Tuesday evening for the Food Standards Agency’s (FSA) annual parliamentary reception. This year’s event focussed on the FSA’s Regulating Our Future (ROF) programme, which is modernising the regulatory model for food.

A resilient and flexible model of regulation

FSA Chairman Heather Hancock gave the key note speech at the event. She spoke about the demands of food safety in a post-EU Exit world and set out the FSA’s role in helping the UK build a resilient and flexible model of regulation for the future.

She said: ‘Public trust in food is our overriding concern. People should have food that is safe, and food that is authentic. The responsibility for food being safe rests with the people who produce, manufacture, sell and serve that food. It’s our job to ensure those people are meeting their responsibilities.

‘As we exit the EU, the FSA firmly intends to maintain that leadership position, and we see opportunities to move faster, smarter and more effectively into the future. Our regulatory reforms will help food businesses gain traction in international markets, and will enable innovation. My ambition for the FSA is to be regarded as an excellent, accountable, modern regulator. I am confident about the future, and that the FSA is well equipped to deal with the challenges and opportunities ahead.’
