Forthcoming PPRP meeting - July 2018

The July meeting of the Projects Peer Review Panel (PPRP) will take place in CS12/13, STFC, Polaris House, Swindon, Wiltshire, SN2 1SZ on the 5 July 2018. The Panel will be reviewing two project proposals.

Members of the science community should contact George Madden on telephone 01793 442049 or e-mail George Madden if they are likely to attend the open presentation.

The proposals being reviewed are as follows:

5 July 2018

10:00 – 11:15 – UK Programme of the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT)

The Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) will be the world’s largest optical and infrared telescope, with first light scheduled for 2024. Building on strategic long-term investment by STFC, the UK ELT Programme supports leadership of the first-light integral field spectrograph (HARMONI) and its dedicated adaptive optics (H-LTAO), a smaller key role in the mid-infrared imager and spectrograph (METIS), UK participation in the second-generation instruments (HIRES and MOSAIC), a targeted R&D programme, and coordination of the integrated programme by the Programme Office.

14:00 – 15:00 – UK Participation in the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST)

LSST is the most ambitious optical sky survey planned. Covering the visible portion of the southern sky twice a week for a decade, it will build up a very deep six-band map of the sky, while its 800+ visits to each field will open up the time domain for large-scale study for the first time. Building on Phase A investment, this proposal requests support for Phase B that will provide the operational DAC and deliver analysis software needed for UK science goals, such as a broker to classify (and trigger follow-up of) transient events and to study stellar and quasar variability, and tools to integrate other UK data needed for multiwavelength analyses, to derive galaxy morphologies and photometric redshifts and to mitigate image quality systematics.

The Panel goes into closed session for the rest of the day.
