Funding must stop vital service closures

On Thursday 7 May, the Government announced that £6 million of the Coronavirus funding for frontline charities would be ring-fenced to support homelessness services as they work to protect people sleeping rough.

Rick Henderson, Chief Executive of Homeless Link, comments: “This additional funding for frontline homelessness charities is extremely welcome, as services find themselves struggling  - with some already forced to close their doors - due to increased operational costs and a loss of income from fundraising during the COVID-19 outbreak. These charities have a vital role in this pandemic, protecting some of our most vulnerable people in new and innovative ways, and it is imperative that they are enabled to continue to fulfil this role.

“Government also needs to think beyond this immediate period to sustainable funding for the future part homelessness services must play, as we eventually transition out of lockdown it is essential that these services still exist, to support people away from homelessness over the longer term.”
