GDP: Sectors with greatest ground to make up need more targeted support

Commenting on today’s (Tuesday) GDP figures, which show a small gain in February, but the economy still 7.8% below pre-pandemic peak and consumer-facing services 18.6% below pre-pandemic levels, TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady said:

“As covid restrictions reduce, the government must look at fresh action to support the recovery. Service sectors have the greatest ground to make up, and there are challenges for those that rely on trade with Europe too with new Brexit-related barriers.

“The government should provide more targeted support, especially for sectors like arts and hospitality where lots of young people have lost jobs and risk long-term unemployment without a fast recovery.”
