Government must revise spending plans to ensure the civil service is fully equipped to deliver a successful Brexit, says FDA

Responding to yesterday's publication from the independent Institute for Government (IfG), which examined the civil service's capacity to deal with the challenges of Brexit, FDA Assistant General Secretary Rob O'Neill said: "The recent budget statement represented another missed opportunity to provide the necessary additional resources to ensure that the civil service is fully equipped to meet the challenges of Brexit.

"Staff cuts since 2010 have left the civil service at its smallest since the Second World War and it is now required to deal with the complexities of Brexit on top of delivering the Government's 2015 manifesto commitments and more recent priorities added by the new Prime Minister.

"This important analysis from IfG makes clear that the Government will have to revise its spending plans to inject additional resources into the civil service, particularly for those departments most impacted by Brexit.

"As we advance rapidly towards the triggering of Article 50 and the commencement of negotiations this is becoming ever more urgent."
