The PM has set out a new framework for managing COVID-19 with more discretion for employers and local authorities.

The Prime Minister has provided a major update as the UK continues to manage the outbreak of COVID-19 with a new framework for the management of COVID-19 in England.

New powers and guidance have been issued today for England that will provide greater discretion for local authorities and employers as the lockdown measures are eased, including plans for more targeted local approaches to manage new outbreaks of COVID-19.

In his speech the Prime Minister set out the upcoming key dates for the easing of social distancing measures in England and when new guidance can be expected:

• Anybody may use public transport, from today, however they should seek to use other forms of travel where possible,
• Local authorities in England have been grated new powers to close premises, enact local lockdowns and issue stay at home orders should there be a new outbreak of infections,
• On 25 July gyms, pools and sports facilities will reopen,
• On 1 August advice on going to work will be updated to include employer discretion,
• On 1 August most remaining leisure settings will reopen; night clubs and soft-play areas will remain closed; 
• In October, conferences and large stadium events can re-start,
• Any remaining outstanding restrictions will be reviewed in November
