Greater Manchester Police cadet leader charged over alleged sexual offences

A serving Greater Manchester Police (GMP) officer has been charged with offences including misconduct in public office and sexual assault.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) received a mandatory conduct referral from GMP in October 2018 in relation to PC Adnan Ali, who ran the Trafford Volunteer Police Cadets. It followed his arrest earlier that month on suspicion of police corruption, resulting from a report of abuse of position for a sexual purpose.

We decided this should be subject to a managed investigation, carried out by the force’s Major Incident Team and supported by its Professional Standards Branch under our independent direction and control. The 34-year-old, based in Trafford, was arrested again on 16 November 2018 on suspicion of police corruption and sexual assault and on 13 March 2019 on suspicion of sexual assault, misconduct in public office and distributing an indecent image.

The investigation was completed and evidence passed to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in August 2019. The CPS has now authorised charges against the officer.

PC Ali was recently charged with:

  • 15 counts of misconduct in a public office
  • five counts of sexual assault, contrary to section 3(1) of the Sexual Offences Act 2003
  • distribution of an indecent image of a child.

PC Ali will appear before Liverpool Magistrates' Court on 5 August 2021.
