Gross misconduct hearing for Greater Manchester Police sergeant

A Greater Manchester Police (GMP) officer is to face a gross misconduct hearing regarding his use of language while on duty, following an Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) investigation.

The investigation followed a referral from GMP, in February 2018, after they reviewed body worn video from officers as part of an ongoing separate criminal investigation.

The footage contained a conversation between two officers, during which it is alleged racist language was used.

Our investigation, completed in August 2018, found evidence of a case to answer for grossmisconduct for Police Sergeant Philip King, for using language to describe members of the public which breach the standards of professional behaviour.

The force agreed with our findings and scheduled a hearing to take place on the 8 and 9 July this year.
