Growing Connections project to revitalise Pontypridd

A new footbridge will connect the Llys Cadwyn development to Ynysangharad Park in Pontypridd thanks to more than £800,000 of Welsh Government investment.

Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Hannah Blythyn has announced the funding, which is part of the ‘Growing Connections in Pontypridd’ project.

The footbridge will create an additional attraction for potential business tenants, residents and visitors to the town. This builds on the work of the Ministerial Taskforce for the South Wales Valleys and the priorities highlighted in the Our Valleys, Our Future delivery plan, including a commitment to close the employment gap between the South Wales Valleys and the rest of Wales.

Hannah Blythyn yesterday said:

We want to support our town centres to ensure they are attractive, vibrant places for people to live, work and visit.

We have already invested £10 million of Welsh Government and EU funding in the Llys Cadwyn development, which is creating a vibrant new quarter in the centre of town including office space and community facilities.

This new bridge will improve the experience of people walking through the town centre. Llys Cadwyn is so close to Ynysangharad War Memorial Park and the fantastic National Lido of Wales, Lido Ponty, Pontypridd has so much to offer as a town centre and I look forward to seeing the development take shape.

Councillor Robert Bevan, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Enterprise, Development and Housing, yesterday said:

The Llys Cadwyn development, backed by £10 million Welsh Government and EU funding, is revitalising a strategic site in the heart of Pontypridd – and will bring hundreds of jobs to the area as the new home of Transport for Wales.

During July 2019, work is due to begin on a new footbridge, providing an important pedestrian link from Llys Cadwyn to Ynysangharad War Memorial Park, which is an important visitor attraction and home to the National Lido of Wales, Lido Ponty.

We welcome the award of this additional £800,000 funding for the new bridge, as part of Welsh Government’s Targeted Regeneration Investment Programme project.

The Welsh Government funding is part of the Targeted Regeneration and Investment programme, which is providing £100 million of capital funding across the country over three years to support regeneration projects in town centres and neighbouring areas. This funding is supported by estimated further investment of at least £60 million from other organisations and businesses.
