Housing Minister writes to English local authorities on COVID-19 and plans for people sleeping rough

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government has written to all English local authorities for an update on protecting people sleeping rough during the COVID-19 crisis.

Responding to the letter, Rick Henderson, said:

"We are encouraged that the government has taken this step and charged all local authorities to address this issue with the appropriate level of urgency. We are particularly pleased that the accompanying guidance includes a triage approach, so that people who are rough sleeping are placed in cohorts, ensuring that the best support is given depending on that individual's COVID19 status.

"What will be key in the coming months is that people brought in are not returned to the streets, but that the funding is in place to provide suitable housing and support to enable those rough sleeping to end their homelessness for good."
