IPCC investigating complaint of alleged assault by a Derbyshire Police officer

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating a complaint of alleged assault by a Derbyshire Constabulary police officer.

The investigation concerns an incident in the Peartree area of Derby on Monday 28 July following reports of a disturbance. Officers attended and arrested a man.

The following day a witness emailed the force footage recorded using a mobile phone camera that appeared to show the arrested man handcuffed and being escorted to a police vehicle. The witness has complained that one of the officers assaulted the man.

In early September the footage was published by a local newspaper and the matter was referred to the IPCC. The IPCC will also look at whether Derbyshire Constabulary’s Professional Standards Department’s (PSD) own investigation into the complaint was proportionate, thorough and effective.

The officers concerned have been informed the IPCC is conducting an investigation.
