IPCC managed investigation into Essex Police’s north Child Abuse Investigation Team

The investigation into Essex Police’s north Child Abuse Investigation Team (CAIT) has now moved to the interview stage with the 29 police staff under investigation.

There are 23 serving officers and six former police officers under investigation. Of those under investigation, there are currently five serving officers and one former officer also under criminal investigation.

The last referral from Essex Police regarding North CAIT was received on 27 August 2014, which was determined to be a managed investigation following assessment by the IPCC. The IPCC has been informed by Essex police that they have finished their review of the North CAIT and that Essex police does not anticipate any more referrals to the IPCC from this review.

In total the IPCC is now managing 54 separate cases into the handling of child abuse inquiries by the north CAIT reported between 2011 and 2014. This includes an investigation that was previously being independently investigated, but has since been reassessed and incorporated into the managed investigation.
