Introducing our new National Council Members

The Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Rt Hon Karen Bradley MP, yesterday announced our new National Council members; including the youngest member ever, 26-year-old George the Poet.

The new appointees will replace members whose terms have expired or will expire over the next few months. Three of the National Council members will also take up roles as Area Chairs in South East, Midlands and North. In addition to our new members we are delighted that the Secretary of State has extended the terms of David Joseph and Rosemary Squire, with Rosemary taking on a new role as South West Area Chair.

Members are drawn from different roles across and beyond the arts and culture sector.  Their expertise and grassroots knowledge will be especially important as the Arts Council begins work on developing its next ten-year strategy.

Sir Nicholas Serota, Chair at Arts Council England said: “It is so important that boards address diversity in the process of recruiting new members. I am particularly pleased to welcome not only our youngest member to date, but also a National Council that has an equal number of men and women. This is work in progress.  We, and our sector must continually challenge ourselves about who is representing the public on the boards of organisations, so we can be confident we understand the interests of contemporary society.

“We are delighted to have worked with DCMS on this recruitment. Area and National Councils play a crucial role in the Arts Council’s decision-making, and their local and specialist knowledge is invaluable. I look forward to working with new members to develop arts and culture in this country.”

National Council is the non-executive board of the Arts Council and holds overall responsibility for the governance of the organisation. Our five Area Councils work to ensure that we develop creative talent and the arts and culture ecology in that area.
