Investigation following death of Relando Tekle-Giorgies found officers did not breach standards of professional behaviour

Officers involved in a fatal high-speed pursuit did not breach standards of professional behaviour an IOPC investigation has concluded.

Relando Tekle-Giorgies was driving a Peugeot 207 in Harrow, London at about 1am on 29 December 2017 when police officers in a marked patrol car attempted to carry out a stop.

A pursuit lasting about three minutes and involving the police car being driven at speeds in excess of 70 miles per hour in a 30mph zone, was terminated when it was decided Mr Tekle-Giorgies had no intention of stopping and the risk he posed to the public through the manner of his driving was too high to continue.

The officer driving the police car responded to the decision to end the pursuit immediately by turning off his siren and emergency lights and slowing the car.

Mr Tekle-Giorgies then crashed into a stationary Volkswagen on Kenton Road. The officers arrived at the scene of the collision about a minute later and immediately began first aid, but the 24-year-old driver sadly died.

Our investigation concluded in May 2018. Our report concluded that no officer breached standards of professional behaviour and the Metropolitan Police Service agreed.

IOPC Regional Director Jonathan Green said: “The death of this young man was a tragedy and my thoughts remain with his family, friends and all those affected.

“Our investigation, completed earlier this year, concluded that no officer breached standards of professional behaviour and despite their efforts to save his life following the crash, the injuries to Mr Tekle-Giorgies were too severe.”

An inquest into the death of Mr Tekle-Giorgies was concluded on 24 September 2018. A jury concluded that Mr Tekle-Giorgies died from a road traffic collision caused by the manner of his driving.

A summary of our final report will be published in due course.
