Investigation into man’s death in Thames Valley Police custody continues

Leroy Junior Medford, 43, died on Sunday 2 April following his arrest and detention at Loddon Valley police station near Reading.

IPCC investigators travelled to the Loddon Valley police station to begin an examination of the scene following a mandatory referral by Thames Valley Police. Relevant CCTV has been obtained, and other evidence is being gathered, which will be carefully analysed along with statements from the officers and staff involved. Presently, no officer or member of custody staff is currently under investigationand this will be kept under review as the investigation progresses.

A post-mortem was carried out on Monday 3 April and the results were inconclusive. We await the outcome of further tests, the results of which will be passed to HM Coroner and Mr Medford’s family.

Associate Commissioner Guido Liguori said:

“Our independent investigation is underway and making good progress. My sympathies remain with Mr Medford’s family and friends and all those affected, and they can be assured that we are undertaking a thorough examination of the circumstances of this incident.

“This will include looking at the care given to Mr Medford while he was in custody, the nature of any risk assessments carried out and whether all relevant policies and procedures were followed during his arrest and detention.”
