Investigation launched following the death of a man in Rochdale

We have begun an investigation following the death of a 52 year-old man from Rochdale in a road traffic incident.

Thomas Grogan died last Monday evening after being struck by a truck. The white DAF tipper truck collided with him near the traffic lights on the corner of Spotland Road and St. Mary’s Gate at around 4pm. An ambulance attended but sadly Mr Grogan died at the scene.

Two Greater Manchester Police (GMP) PCSOs arrived at the scene shortly after the collision. Our independent investigation will look at what, if any, contact Mr Grogan had with GMP prior to his death.

IOPC Regional Director Amanda Rowe said:

“We received a referral from GMP soon after this tragic incident and our investigators attended the scene and the post incident procedures. We gathered initial statements from the PCSOs and are in the process of securing CCTV footage of the moments leading up to Mr Grogan’s death.

“We have made contact with Mr Grogan’s immediate family and will be keeping them informed throughout our investigation. Our thoughts are with his family and friends and all those affected by this extremely sad event.”
