Investigation launched into conduct of former Chief Constable of Cleveland Police

We have begun an investigation into the conduct of the former Chief Constable of Cleveland Police, Mike Veale.

We received a referral from the office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Cleveland on Thursday 17 January, which contained allegations that Mr Veale had behaved inappropriately and acted in a discriminatory manner.

The nature of the alleged conduct can be broadly summarised as: alleged inappropriate behaviour towards colleagues, discrimination, and unprofessional behaviour.

Regional Director Miranda Biddle said: “It is crucial that allegations of a serious nature are investigated thoroughly and independently. Mr Veale has been informed that we have started our investigation and we will contact him and other parties in due course, as part of our enquiries.

“We are at the very start of the process so it would not be appropriate for me to comment further, other than to reassure the public, and all those working at Cleveland Police, that we will handle this investigation both diligently and sensitively. This investigation will be managed by our team in Cardiff to provide additional independence from our regional structure.”
